Petal Dust Cakery
Cute. Feminine. Clean and simple.
This is the look Cristina Vazquez envisioned for her new website, Petal Dust Cakery. After a phone call to discuss this direction in more detail, I was off gathering inspiration, creating a detailed shot list complete with shooting angles and lighting diagrams, and spending quality time in my prop room pulling elegant surfaces, dainty dishes and feminine, gold-trimmed accents.
As you can see, I'm a planner by nature, yet I find the photos that really shine are created when thorough pre-production prep meets in-the-moment inspiration. With that splash of serendipity, the results always have a little something extra that's hard to define on paper, but leave us giddy when we see them on the monitor. And that's exactly what happened here.
See, Cristina definitely didn't want the typical chef portrait — you know the one, arms folded, looking directly at the camera with an "in charge" look on her face — but she left the specifics up to me. I came to the shoot with a few ideas in mind, but as she was dusting one of her cakes with glitter, I noticed her hands and realized that should be the feature. Coupled with her bubbly personality, I think this "glitter hands" portrait says it all, don't you? Of course we took other, safer, poses with her face in focus, but this remains my favorite of the bunch because it tells a story of the joy in finding your calling.
Another moment of inspiration struck after we completed the macarons photos from our shot list. I sampled one that had cracked and found it so delicate and airy that I imagined all of them floating away. So that's exactly what I created below, which added a playful element to the photos from our session.
I'm always excited to work with clients who are passionate about what they do, but doubly so when they're a local business and I can support them in the community. Cristina lives just a few towns over in northern New Jersey, and I can wholeheartedly recommend her services to anyone who needs a wedding or special occasion cake or beautiful macarons. I mean, c'mon:
AND she's on this season of Food Network's Spring Baking Championship! She's made it through the first two rounds, and I'm not surprised at all, given what I saw (and tasted) in my home during our photo shoot. #teamcristina all the way!
So that's a brief look at my thought process for a more editorial-style commercial session where we have the ability to play. Does that approach resonate with you?
